This encaustic painting is inspired by the Miami Rock Ridge, a limestone landscape shaped by water over time. Layers of earthy greens, blues, browns, and ivory suggest rock, soil, water, and plant life. The textures reflect how water has moved over and through the limestone, slowly shaping the land into “karst” features such as holes, sharp rock, and small caves.
The Deering Estate sits on this ridge, which formed over 120,000 years ago and rises up to 25 feet above sea level. It acts as a natural barrier between Biscayne Bay and inland South Florida.
