Day 12: Stuck
•

It’s actually a total myth that ostriches stick their heads in the ground to hide from predators! 🙈 Since they are flightless birds, ostriches lay their eggs in holes dug into the ground rather than nests in trees. They occasionally stick their heads into the holes to check on the eggs and turn them, hence the myth. Did you know that it was just a myth before today??

Day 11: Sour

I imagine the cane toad’s poisonous toxin is s o u r 😵💫🐸 The cane toad is native to South and Central America, but it was introduced to Australia in 1935 to control beetles that were destroying the sugarcane crops. Cane toads are hardy creatures, and Australia has no natural predators or diseases that help control the toad’s numbers. As a result, cane toads are now an invasive species to the island nation. Just what we need: another creature that will kill you in Australia 🙃😝

Day 9: Pressure

The nautilus lives in the deep waters of the east Indian and west Pacific Oceans. 🌊 Nautili (or nautiluses; you can use either!) are cephalopods, meaning they are closely related to octopi, squids, and cuttlefish. Nautilus shells have inside chambers, or compartments, which they use for buoyancy control. As the nautilus grows, it closes off sections of the chamber it lives in and adds to the open end of the shell, making the shell larger. These mysterious creatures are so neat! 🤩
charlie I thought of you when I was drawing this one today! Would you please sign my petition to make a nautilus emoji a thing?? 🥺

Day 7: Fan

Fun fact about the fan-tailed guppy: since guppies love to eat mosquito larvae, they have been deliberately set free to help lessen the threat of malaria. The “Guppy Movement” was launched in 2014, and within the first 2 years, some places using this method had already seen a 50% drop in cases of mosquito-borne diseases. Super cool! 🐠

Day 3: Vessel
•

•
A ribbon eel emerging from a vessel🏺
Ribbon eels have long, protruding nostrils that are leaf-like in appearance. Ribbon eels use their nostrils to sense vibrations in the water which helps them hunt and defend themselves. Like moray eels, divers often mistake ribbon eels as being aggressive, as they are commonly seen with their mouths opening and closing in what could be interpreted as a threatening manner. However, they are simply breathing when they do this.
