In light of the heightened racism and xenophobia reported on the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the CBS Student Board would like to express our firm support for our Asian and Asian-American communities. Cases of exclusion and discrimination towards Asian and Asian-American students have increased on campus and throughout the country. We find such unjustifiable acts as a barrier to our College’s and University’s mission. During such times, it is important to support one another rather than isolate based on race or nationality. The CDC has issued many recommendations on how to remain healthy during this flu season with the rise of the coronavirus, and among the most important pieces of advice is to “help stop fear by letting people know that being of Asian descent does not increase the chance of getting or spreading COVID-19”.1

COVID-19 should not be taken lightly, however, as its spread has resulted in tragedy around the world. Over 88,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported worldwide, with more than 3,000 fatalities.3 No confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Minnesota,2 but basic hygiene practices are still important, especially during flu season. This includes washing your hands frequently with an alcohol based soap, covering your sneezes with your elbow or kleenex, and staying home when you are sick.

The Minnesota Department of Health and the University’s Public Health Officers have been following the outbreak closely and taking measures to provide healthcare workers with the necessary resources, as outlined in President Gabel’s recent email. While there are no cases of COVID-19 in Minnesota, you can keep up to date with the University’s response on the health emergency section of the Safe Campus website.

Sincerely,

The College of Biological Sciences Student Board
