🏥👶 A Century of Service — Allen Memorial Home's Vital Role in Mobile’s History 👶🏥

Did you know that one of Mobile’s longest-running institutions dedicated to mothers and children began with an orphan’s first Christmas?

Founded in 1911, the Allen Memorial Home was originally established as the Alabama Maternity and Infant Home, a Catholic-run institution that cared for orphaned children and expectant mothers. The first child arrived on Christmas Day, 1911, and over the next four decades, the home became a sanctuary for hundreds of children and mothers in need.

📍 Located at 1704 Catherine Street, the Allen Memorial Home was named in honor of Bishop Edward P. Allen, who served the Diocese of Mobile and championed the care of the city's most vulnerable citizens.

🏗️ Over time, the home expanded:

A new building was dedicated in 1941.

It provided a maternity ward and a safe place for u***d mothers and their babies.

It cared for an average of 50 small children at any given time.

Over its first 41 years, the home cared for more than 900 children and facilitated over 200 adoptions.

The facility included not just nurseries but also classrooms, a playground, dining rooms, nurses' quarters, and even a kindergarten.

By the 1930s, the institution received additional funding from the Catholic Charities and became part of Mobile’s growing system of care for orphans, mothers, and children.

The Allen Memorial Home was more than a building — it was a vital part of Mobile's social and religious history, serving families in crisis and reminding us of the city’s long tradition of compassion and care.
