We’ve been thinking about diversity a lot, mainly because it’s always an important topic to our customers, but also because the first half of the year is filled with observances and celebrations of diversity. February is Black History Month. April is Arab American Heritage Month. May encompasses Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month, and June is LGBTQ Pride Month.

One of our team members mentioned that, at a recent graduation ceremony, they looked around and realized they were sitting in a stadium with all the above-mentioned cultures and then some—everyone, together, in one spot, sharing a universally understood and joyful occasion.

We can’t help but think that they were, quite literally, sitting in the Great American Melting Pot.

Melting pots make us think of food and how all those families left that common experience for smaller graduation parties, where they likely celebrated with a breathtaking diversity of foods, music, traditions, and languages.

Embracing diversity can be extremely beautiful and rewarding, nuanced and challenging at the same time. It can help us connect with any new and unfamiliar person or culture by thinking of the many things we have in common – like the joy of watching our children graduate and our hopes and fears for their future happiness.
