Iranian-born Armenian violin pedagogue Ivan Galamian passed away on this day in 1981, at the age of 78

He held long-term teaching positions at the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School, where he shaped generations of leading soloists

His students included the likes of Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, Michael Rabin, Ruggiero Ricci, Dorothy DeLay, Kyung-Wha Chung, Charles Castleman, Glenn Dicterow, Eugene Fodor, Miriam Fried, Erick Friedman, Dong-Suk Kang, Ani and Ida Kavafian, Chin Kim, Jaime Laredo, Fredell Lack, Sergiu Luca, Berl Senofsky, Arnold Steinhardt, Sally Thomas, Donald Weilerstein, and Carmel Kaine
