Deputy Sheriff Theresa King and Deputy Sheriff Patrick Rohrer never expected a routine prisoner transport to become their final call.
On June 18, 2018, the two Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputies were unloading an inmate from a transport van at the Correction and Court Services Building in Kansas City, Kansas, when the prisoner suddenly launched a violent attack. During the struggle, he managed to seize a deputy's firearm and opened fire, fatally wounding both deputies. Even after suffering critical injuries, one of the deputies returned fire and wounded the suspect before collapsing.
Deputy King was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after midnight. The suspect later pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder and one count of aggravated robbery, receiving two life sentences.
Deputy King served the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office for 13 years and is survived by her three children. Deputy Rohrer served for seven years and is survived by his wife, daughter, son, parents, sister, and grandmother.
What began as a standard inmate transfer ended in a heartbreaking act of violence that claimed the lives of two dedicated deputies who served their community with courage and commitment until their final moments.

Police Officer Ted Donald made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to a burglary-in-progress call at the Butler Housing Projects in the Bronx. When he and his partner arrived, they discovered an apartment door with its lock drilled out. Believing someone was unlawfully inside, the officers entered to protect the residents. As they carefully moved down the hallway, Officer Donald was suddenly shot in the head and chest. Despite the danger, his partner returned fire, and the suspect eventually surrendered.
The 32-year-old suspect claimed he had permission to be in the apartment and mistakenly believed the officers were burglars. Although charged with murder, he was later convicted of criminally negligent homicide. Officer Donald had faithfully served with the New York City Housing Authority Police Department for nine years, dedicating his life to protecting others. He left behind a loving wife and daughter, but his courage, sacrifice, and commitment to duty continue to be remembered. Rest in peace, Officer Ted Donald β€” your service and bravery will never be forgotten.
