John Fogerty was once sued for sounding too much like... John Fogerty.

Fantasy Records claimed “The Old Man Down the Road” copied “Run Through the Jungle,” a song John had written years earlier during his CCR years. So John brought his guitar into court, played both songs for the jury, and proved they were two separate compositions.

He won the case, taking the fight all the way to the Supreme Court, helping to set an important precedent for artists defending their work. The John Fogerty defense allows artists to never be sued for plagiarizing themselves.
