I’m still taking care of my ex’s kids even though I don’t owe him or his family anything. When the boys called me saying their dad wasn’t answering and their mom was laid up in the hospital, I didn’t pause. I drove out in the middle of bad weather to grab food and supplies so they wouldn’t be stuck at home hungry and sitting in the dark while their own father ignored them.

On top of that, I sent them a full McDonald’s order and tipped extra because someone had to show up. Their mom is going to wake up worried, but at least she’ll know I made sure her kids were okay while their dad disappeared.

People can say I’m doing too much, but I refuse to let children suffer because the adults around them can’t get it together. It’s not about history between me and him. It’s about stepping up when nobody else will.
