In July 1988, workers aboard the Piper Alpha oil platform carried out routine evening operations in the North Sea. Hundreds of men lived and worked on the giant offshore structure, isolated from the mainland by miles of dark ocean.

Then, a massive explosion ripped through the platform.

A gas leak ignited deep within the rig, triggering a chain of devastating explosions that tore through living quarters, production areas, and escape routes while fires burned hundreds of feet above the sea.

Witnesses later described seeing enormous flames illuminate the night sky while workers jumped into the freezing North Sea to escape the inferno. Rescue helicopters battled smoke and heat as the platform slowly collapsed into twisted steel and burning debris.

The Piper Alpha disaster became the deadliest offshore oil catastrophe in history and completely transformed safety regulations throughout the global oil industry.
