Happy Loving Day ❤️everyone! In this time where rights and liberties are being questioned and challenged, it is important to acknowledge and celebrate history that brings people together.
🗞️ What is Loving Day?

⚖️ In Loving v. Virginia, the US Supreme Court struck down Virginia’s law against in*******al marriage on June 12, 1967, while also ending the ban on in*******al marriages in other states. At the time, Virginia’s 1924 Racial Integrity Act, which forbade in*******al marriages, barred their union. Two lawyers, Bernard S. Cohen and Philip J. Hirschkop, took on the Lovings’ case. On that historic day in June 12, 1967, the Supreme court decided that Virginia’s anti-miscegenation statute violated both the Equal Protection Clause and the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Chief justice Earl Warren wrote the opinion for the court, stating marriage is a basic civil right and to deny this right on a basis of race is “directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment” and deprives all citizens “liberty without due process of law.”
The Lovings were finally able to openly live in their desired community, and Richard and Mildred raised three children.

Despite this federal ruling, some states like Alabama did not enact the law in their regions until as late as the year 2000 !

Today and every day, we celebrate in*******al unions and the right to marry and be with people of any race! ❤️✊🏽
