The Church Slavonic language is the repository of the Good News—the Gospel of the Lord and the Word of God. At its very heart is the Name of God.
Internal transformation of the human person through Church Slavonic education.
1. Religious ignorance is spiritually and socially dangerous.
2. Therefore, the Church has always made education one of her first priorities.
3. The goal of this education is not merely literacy or historical knowledge.
4. The true purpose is to place a person in living contact with the Word of God.
5. The Word of God acts upon the soul by enlightening the mind, purifying the heart, and strengthening the will.
6. Church Slavonic is not valuable simply because it is ancient, but because for over a millennium it has been the vessel through which countless generations encountered these grace-filled effects of the divine Word.
7. Therefore, studying Church Slavonic is not antiquarian scholarship — it is participation in the Church’s continuous tradition of spiritual formation.
I wanted to share something that I read in a book today. It's a book by a Russian linguist about Church Slavonic language. This is the idea:
"In sacred language Words become verbal icons. They do not merely describe reality. They participate in it."
This really correlates with an idea of another Russian linguist I shared during our SC1 course about the Titlo words: “Títlo is an orthographic nimbus (halo), the royal crown of the word, the beauty of ecclesiastical writing,” and it is placed “above sacred words to indicate their holiness and hidden within them divine mystery and wisdom.”
Very nicely written food for thought that I wanted to share with you.
A modern reader asks:
“What was the author trying to say?”
A medieval Christian reader would ask:
“How does God act through these words?”
That single shift changes everything.
