“When I became a climber, I used to find falling scary, even on sport climbs. It’s like my brain was running a physical engine that only computed what would happen without a rope. It took years to overcome that fear, and sometimes it tries to creep its way back in. Knowing there’s a solid rope between you and oblivion helps alleviate that.”

— Photographer & Athlete

Climbing is a strange relationship with trust.

You trust your partner.
You trust the bolts.
But mostly—you trust the rope.

Every fall we took in Chattanooga reminded us why ropes matter. Modern dynamic ropes are built to stretch, absorb force, and reduce the shock of a fall, turning what could be catastrophic into just another moment in the day.

That invisible engineering is the difference between fear and freedom on the wall.

Which is why when we test ropes, we don’t hold back.

Because if there’s one thing climbers know…
it’s that the rope is the last word.

Death of Villains

I’ve know for some time. Together we’ve helped established the first climb gym in Jamaica, climbed towers in Moab, and now established the FA of “Death of Villains” 5.15a.

When Kai approached me to make a film about a potential FA ascent, I wondered how we could make this more than just another shred film. To create something deeper and more meaningful. had told me that during Kai’s early visits to the cave, they had met and he had opened the route specifically for Kai.

The juxtaposition between Kai’s impeccable nature and Joe’s shaded past raised my eyebrows and I knew that there was some greater than a first ascent here.

It was the colliding of worlds.

I often joke that can only send at night. Having spend hundreds of days climbing together, I’ve witnessed him send dozens of hard test pieces, though almost all exclusively in the middle of the night.

In order:

The Grey V14/8B+
Scarred for Life V14/8B+
