A decade ago, the Ice Bucket Challenge changed what was possible in ALS research.

It raised awareness, it raised funding, and it gave scientists the resources to pursue answers that had been out of reach for years. Since then, research has moved forward in ways that once felt improbable: a deeper understanding of the genetics behind ALS, new therapies reaching those living with the disease, and a growing global research infrastructure built to move faster than ever before.

But ALS is still here. Families are still receiving diagnoses. And the work is far from finished.

Chris Johnson's decision to share his diagnosis has brought the Ice Bucket Challenge back into the spotlight, and we're using this moment to remind everyone why it mattered in the first place.

Research is the only way to build a world where Everyone with ALS Lives.

Watch how to take part, then join the challenge and help spread awareness and fund the research that gets us there.

When Target ALS was founded in 2013, the research landscape looked very different. Promising ideas stalled without the right support. Scientists worked in isolation, within a culture that rewarded individual achievement over collective progress.

We set out to change that. Our fund-enable-conduct model exists to make sure that good science doesn't slip through the cracks, that the best ideas have what they need to move forward, and that the people working on them aren't doing it alone.

At the 2026 Target ALS Annual Meeting, AJ Kayakas of inistro made the case for why our Data Engine, which houses comprehensive, high-quality datasets, represents a major opportunity for machine learning.

It could refine how we understand ALS patient populations, improve clinical trial design, and ultimately accelerate the path towards effective treatments.
