🎭 Tips for Surviving VI Carnival
(Especially if you ain’t been in years, or you dragging outsiders with you)
Today is Monday — official kickoff. In the spirit of community service and saving lives, here are a few reminders to help everybody make it through the week with dignity… or at least with slippers still on your feet.
1. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. 💦
If you starting today, technically you late… but better late than passed out.
This is a long week: little sleep, plenty walking, sun blazing, nonstop movement, and some of allyuh treating rum like it’s a food group.
Drink water steady. Not one bottle at noon and call that effort.
We not adding dehydration to the parade route.
2. If you 45+ and knees sounding like maracas… bring your chair.
Use wisdom and self-awareness.
The Village Chair Section is a sacred place. A community. A support group. A retirement plan.
Somebody go watch your bag. Somebody go save your spot. Somebody go say, “Your song come on!”
When the act start — move to the front.
When the act done — return to your throne.
Sit down. Rest. Catch your breath. Eat your johnny cake with the holes in it. Protect your knees, hips, and lower back like they federal property.
3. Fair Day is the hottest day of the year. ☀️☀️☀️
This is not opinion. This is science.
Wear sunscreen. Wear a hat. Carry umbrella. Find shade where you can.
Respect the St. Thomas sun, because that sun will roast you evenly on both sides and keep moving.
4. Rum is boss. 🍾🥂
You cannot defeat rum.
Many have challenged it. Many have lost publicly. Some still have missing memories from 2017.
Eat before drinking. Pace yourself. Drink water between rounds.
Have a designated driver or sleep exactly where you park.
And please — do not drink and drive. Too many people on the road already steering with vibes and prayer.
Special note for visitors:
In the Virgin Islands, drinks are poured with faith, confidence, and no measuring cup.
The mixer is often there for decoration. Sometimes just for color. Adjust yourself accordingly.
Rum is boss. Case closed.
5. Employers… this is a dead week.
Accept it.
If employees show up at all, you are blessed already.
No true deadlines exist this week. Everybody mentally on the road.
If you pass a desk and see somebody head down, they are not sleeping.
They are praying. 🙏🏾
That prayer may last ten minutes. It may last two hours. Spirit moves differently during Carnival.
Do not interfere with their worship.
6. If you bring somebody from the States who don’t understand Carnival culture…
Please enroll them in Carnival 101 immediately.
Mandatory subjects include:
* Whining
* Feteing
* Jamming
* Minding your business
Required homework:
* A Little Wine – Patrice Roberts
* Just a Little Bit – Destra Garcia
Help them understand:
If two people dancing like rent due tomorrow, they may be:
* Friends
* Strangers
* Cousins
* People who met 37 seconds ago
It may look serious. It may look scandalous. It may look like court evidence.
Most times… it is just a wine.
No feelings. No future plans. No matching outfits ordered online.
Relax yourself and enjoy Carnival.
7. The man you meet in the Village is not yours
Especially if he “just come home from abroad.”
That is a wine, not a wedding.
Protect yourself. Use wisdom. Ask questions.
We do not need Carnival babies, confusion, or crying status updates by next Tuesday.
8. Carnival is for freeing up.
Dance. Laugh. Lime. Eat something greasy at 2AM. Enjoy the culture. Enjoy the people. Enjoy the vibes.
Leave guns home. Leave beef home. Leave bad mind home. Leave drama home charging.
This is a long week. Pace yourself… but enjoy yourself properly.
Happy St. Thomas Carnival 🇻🇮
