Cleaning of the union soldier monument at the historic Morristown Green, Morristown, NJ. Erected in 1871, this is likely the first time that the monument has been touched. There was a whole lot of lichen.

D/2 was applied top to bottom. Lichen and algae scrubbed with brushes. Then water rinsed from spray bottles (hose hokup not available). Then a final application of D/2 left in place. 100% top to bottom.

Jonathan Appell, a D/2 distributor, is doing a 48 State (+DC) cemetery workshop tour. One of our staff attended his workshop in Palenville, NY on August 24, 2020. A small local cemetery with an attendance of around 35 people. It was a pleasure to spend the day watching Jonathan do a stream of consciousness kind of ongoing instruction. One of his sponsors is D/2 biological solution.

Ted Kinnari, Norman Weiss and Ken Follett will be available to answer questions.

Ted Kinnari attended Columbia University’s Historic Preservation Program and was in the first class Norman Weiss taught at CU. He served as Alumni President, Adjunct Professor and was an early recipient of the Alumni Award. After graduate school he worked for the Brooklyn Museum and then the NY Public Library and was responsible for running their restoration programs. After leaving the Library, Ted started a restoration construction/consulting firm. One of the firm’s projects was to write specifications for the cleaning of Grand Central Terminal's Celestial Ceiling murals. This experience, and his prior involvement with facade cleaning at the NYPL and Brooklyn Museum led to an interest in developing a better, safer product for facade cleaning. After several years working with Norman Weiss, D/2 Biological Solution was created. D/2 has now been in use for more than 20 years. Ted is the president and owner of D/2 Biological Solution Inc.

Norman R. Weiss, trained as an analytical chemist, is recognized for more than fifty years of scientific work with historic buildings. He has taught at Columbia University since 1977. Professor Weiss is a Fellow of the Association for Preservation Technology, Vice-President of MCC Materials, and Director of Scientific Research of Integrated Conservation Resources, Inc. He is Consultant Editor of the UK-based Journal of Architectural Conservation, and Chairman of the Preservation Technology and Training Board of the National Park Service. He is also a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation and of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Ken Follett has been in the hands-on and contracting side of historic preservation for more than forty-five years. Ken works as an independent consultant for D/2 Biological Solution. He is a founding member and first past-president of the Preservation Trades Network and a lifetime member. He currently works with his son, David Follett, to provide support services to design teams in their investigations of historic structures. An early background in fireplace construction and stonemasonry extended into restoration contracting in the New York City region, specializing in a wide range of masonry cleaning methodologies.
