On December 5, 2022, a camera on board the uncrewed Orion spacecraft captured this view as Orion approached its return powered flyby of the Moon. Beyond one of Orion's extended solar arrays lies dark, smooth, terrain along the western edge of the Oceanus Procellarum. Prominent on the lunar nearside Oceanus Procellarum, the Ocean of Storms, is the largest of the Moon's lava-flooded maria. The lunar terminator, the shadow line between lunar night and day, runs along the left of this frame. The 41 kilometer diameter crater Marius is top center, with ray crater Kepler peeking in at the edge, just right of the solar array wing. Kepler's bright rays extend to the north and west, reaching the dark-floored Marius. By December 11, 2022 the Orion spacecraft had returned to its home world. The historic Artemis 1 mission ended with Orion's successful splashdown in planet Earth's water-flooded Pacific Ocean.Image Credit: NASA, Artemis 1

🪐 Astronomers may have discovered a bizarre new type of exoplanet — a scorching sulfur-rich “hell world” unlike anything in our Solar System.

Scientists say the planet appears to contain massive amounts of sulfur trapped beneath a global ocean of molten magma, while toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide dominate its atmosphere. The extreme world is so hot that parts of its surface may exist as a permanent magma ocean. 🌋⚡

Researchers believe discoveries like this could force scientists to rethink how exoplanets are classified and how alien worlds evolve under extreme conditions.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers are now uncovering planets that are far stranger and more diverse than anyone imagined just a few years ago. 🌌

🔥 A major wildfire has broken out inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone after a drone crash reportedly ignited dry vegetation near the contaminated region.

Emergency crews are working to contain the fire as concerns grow over the possibility of radioactive particles being released into the air through smoke and ash. ☢️🌫️

Authorities say radiation levels are currently being closely monitored, while experts warn that fires in the Chernobyl area can disturb contaminated soil left behind from the 1986 nuclear disaster.

The incident is another reminder that, decades later, the abandoned zone around Chernobyl still remains environmentally fragile and dangerous. 🌍

🌊 Scientists are warning that the Caspian Sea — the world’s largest inland body of water — is shrinking at an alarming rate.

Researchers say rising global temperatures and increasing evaporation are causing water levels in the Caspian Sea to steadily decline. Some projections suggest parts of the sea could lose significant portions of their surface area by the end of the century. 🌍

The shrinking sea threatens unique ecosystems, fish populations, coastal cities, and millions of people who depend on the region for trade and resources.

Experts warn that the environmental and economic consequences could become severe if water levels continue to fall in the coming decades.

🚀 NASA’s Curiosity rover encountered one of its strangest problems yet on Mars after accidentally pulling an entire rock out of the ground during a drilling operation.

The 13-kilogram rock, nicknamed “Atacama,” became firmly stuck to the rover’s drill arm — something never seen before during Curiosity’s 13+ years of exploring the Red Planet. 🌌

For nearly a week, NASA engineers worked to free the rock using vibrations, drill rotations, and careful robotic arm maneuvers. Eventually, the stubborn Martian rock finally broke loose, crashed onto the surface, and shattered apart.

The entire incident was captured by Curiosity’s onboard cameras, giving scientists and space enthusiasts a rare behind-the-scenes look at the unexpected challenges of operating advanced machinery millions of kilometers away from Earth. 🪐🔧

🌌 Astronomers have discovered an unusual galaxy that appears far more evolved than expected for the early universe.

Using observations from the James Webb Space Telescope, researchers found a galaxy with a surprisingly complex structure and intense brightness only a relatively short time after the Big Bang. 🚀

The discovery challenges current theories about how quickly galaxies could form and organize themselves in the young universe. Some scientists say objects like this simply “shouldn’t exist” so early in cosmic history.

Findings like these are forcing astronomers to rethink parts of our understanding of galaxy formation and the evolution of the universe itself. ✨
