Saddened to learn today of Andre Watts' passing. Even sadder to learn he actually died YESTERDAY and barely anyone seemed to report it, outside of social media. Thank god I spend so much time there.
Andre Watts was a giant. The first Black classical performer I ever knew about. My father had one of his records (I don't recall which - that was 40 years ago and long gone). I recall being a kid and seeing this Black guy on a classical album cover and thought it abnormal but hope-giving.
That hope never gave way to a career as a pianist, but Watts' existence meant everything to me. His life and work has been in the background of my whole process.
Thank you Mr. Watts. You will be beyond sorely missed - by the world, but by me.
What a loss.
