China unveils desk-sized supercomputer that thinks like a human brain

Chinese researchers have introduced the BI Explorer (BIE-1), a compact supercomputer designed to mimic human brain functions. Unveiled in October 2025, it is described as the world's first "brain-like intelligent computing body."

About the size of a mini-fridge, the BIE-1 contains 1,152 CPU cores, 4.8 terabytes of DDR5 memory, and 204 terabytes of storage. It runs quietly at under 45 decibels and uses roughly one-tenth the power of traditional supercomputers, making it suitable for standard office or lab environments without special cooling.

The system’s Intuitive Neural Network architecture combines numeric, symbolic, and logic-based computations. This allows it to process multiple types of data at once while showing the reasoning behind its outputs, avoiding the “catastrophic forgetting” seen in traditional AI.

Performance tests showed BIE-1 training on tens of billions of tokens in just 30 hours on a single-node CPU setup, with training and inference speeds rivaling large GPU clusters. The design reduces hardware costs by about 50 percent and energy use by up to 90 percent compared to conventional supercomputers.
