"Because that truck was reported stolen from a construction yard in Detroit three days ago," Cade said, raising his voice enough to carry over the engine noise, "and the man driving it is on parole for grand theft auto."

The tow truck driver slammed on his brakes and looked out the window with the expression of a man whose options had just narrowed dramatically. Octavia shrieked that her husband owned the truck. Cade asked whether he owned it or leased it from a shell company that acquired assets through insurance fraud. The deputy reached for his radio. Thaddius stepped forward and told the officer to make the arrest immediately, but the momentum had shifted, and when a momentum shifts at this velocity, no amount of cashmere authority can reverse it.

Cade's phone buzzed. A single vibration. The signal.

He put it on speaker. The voice that came through was authoritative and crisp, with the particular cadence of someone who issued operational directives for a living. *This is Director Miller, United States Treasury. We are executing the warrant. Secure the perimeter.*

Three black SUVs tore into the parking lot and cut off the exits simultaneously. Federal agents in windbreakers poured out with the precision of a tidal wave breaking on a familiar shoreline.
