The Two-Spirit Powwow is 1 Day away. Tomorrow, June 13th is the day we've all been waiting for β€ΌοΈπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

I would like to take this opportunity to honor one of our own: Joe Torres. Its with deep sadness that I announce the passing of our beloved Joe. He started his journey to Sky World on June 6th and while we are all heart broken, I want to talk about how special Joe was and remember the light he brought to our community and all those who knew him.

He was a friend, a mentor, a son, a brother, an uncle and our Q***r Elder (QuElder). He also worked on the Two-Spirit Powwow Planning Committee to help organize this event and so I want this post to be dedicated to his honor and memory.

Joe helped to pave the way for those of us who are Two-Spirit. He reclaimed the space and words so those finding their way could see a path toward acceptance. What he did for the Indigenous community with his speeches, his stories and his life lessons were profound. Joe had the gift gab and would talk to anyone who listened. And so, we all listened; to his words, to his laughter and to his strong medicine he so willingly gave to those around him.

Joe often spoke about how we needed to decolonize our minds and our way of life. His passion for keeping the old ways alive was seen through his strong fire and will to educate with all the events he attended and all the credentials earned.

I first met Joe while he worked at a local Native American craft store: Turtle Island Gifts. I walked up to the counter to buy some items not knowing my life would be changed for the better after meeting him. He asked me how I was and I replied in the usual way: "Im good! How are you?" Thats when Joe saw the rainbow beaded ring I was wearing. He told me how much he liked it and how it was nice to see other LGBTQIA2S+ in the area. He told me about a presentation he was putting on about the Two-Spirit identity and how his boss asked him to present but he was nervous. It was rare to see Joe that nervous but it was his first ever presentation.

The rest is history. We became fast friends and soon him and I were at Q***r events in the area together. Joe helped me become more comfortable being around my Indigenous community and also be q***r.

My good friend Joe, as you've said before: "We are part of the stars." Rest easy my friend, among the stars and in Sky World.

On^ ki? wah (See you later)

If youve made it this far, Yaw^ko (Thank You) Have fun in honor of Joe!
