This video shows a honey bee queen carrying a single Varroa destructor mite on her body. While finding a mite on a queen is uncommon, it serves as an important reminder that Varroa mites are present throughout the colony.

Varroa mites are the most damaging pest of honey bees in North America. They feed on developing and adult bees and transmit numerous viruses, including Deformed Wing Virus (DWV), which can weaken colonies and contribute to colony losses.

The only way to know your mite levels is to monitor regularly using an alcohol wash or other validated sampling method.

Recommended monitoring schedule:
β€’ Early spring
β€’ Mid-summer
β€’ Late summer/early fall
β€’ Anytime colony health concerns arise

Don't guessβ€”test.

πŸ“Έ Have you checked your mite levels recently? Share your results in the comments!

Over the past months, we delivered our 2026 Queen Rearing Short Courses in Overton, Lubbock, San Antonio, Fort Worth, and Paris, Texas! 🐝

We would like to sincerely thank all participants, volunteers, Extension agents, collaborators, and local partners who helped make these events possible. Your support, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn are what made this first year of the program such a success.

This was the first year of our statewide Queen Rearing Program, and we are already working on ways to continue improving and expanding these courses to reach more beekeepers across Texas in the future.

Thank you for being part of this journey and for supporting queen rearing education and locally adapted queens in Texas. We are excited for what is ahead!
