Truck industry has traditionally been a men-dominated business. However, there are actually more and more women entering into the field.

📈 The percentage of female truck drivers has increased 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟰.𝟲% 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝟳.𝟵𝟭% 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵, with a number of 352,757 female drivers.

There are both challenges and opportunities for women to take the job. In the aspect of challenges, besides industry itself, the regulatory environment also gives women hurdles. For example, the truck cabs are designed mainly to fit the physical size of men. Even if you can adjust it, it is still more uncomfortable for women after a day long driving. 💪

👉👉But the good thing is that the pay for both genders are the same. Truck drivers get paid based on mileage, hours, or percentage of the load. Due to the driver shortage, the salary of being a truck driver is getting higher and higher.

On May 18th, 2021, Senator John Cornyn proposed a truck-only Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax during the Senate Finance Committee’s hearing, citing a $0.25 per-mile rate.

✒️ Last week, the president of American Trucking Associations Chris Spear and the president of Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Todd Spencer have co-signed a letter to express their strong opposition to the Cornyn tax on the behalf of American trucking industry. In the letter, they claim that trucks have already paid 48 times more in federal highway user fees than other cars do. It is inequitable to place the burden on the truckers for avoiding Highway Trust Fund insolvency. 📖

Due to the unanticipated shutdown of the colonial pipeline, FMCSA is taking action to help by creating flexibility to motor carriers.

A temporary HOS exemption has been issued to motor carriers and drivers who transport gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other refined petroleum products to the following states: AL, AR, DC, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NJ, NY, NC, PA, SC, TN, TX and VA.
