Close to delivery? Stay informed! Providers should always explain what is being given to your baby and why and they should always ask for permission.
nurse.mama Mama, you have rights, and you don't have to feel guilty for having a preference for your birth.
You are the birthing queen; you are the boss. Now, don't refuse things just because you have that power. Instead, make choices grounded in knowledge, then let your preferences be known.
If you choose the baby meds, some or all, ask that they be given after the golden hour is over and administered on top of you!

Here's why each is given:
💉Vitamin K Injection: IM injection given in one of baby’s thighs, it is given because Vitamin K is needed in blood clotting. Newborn babies normally have low levels of this vitamin for the first few days. The injection prevents vitamin K deficiency bleeding (hemorrhagic disease of the newborn). Some parents prefer oral vitamin K and some prefer none is given. In some states it is a state law that it must be given.
👁️Antibiotic eye ointment (usually erythromycin) is placed in the baby's eyes after birth. This is to protect babies from getting bacterial eye infections that can occur during birth. It was started back in the 1800's due to babes going blind after getting infected in the birth canal from chlamydia or gonorrhea. They began treating all babies and the cases dropped. If you are free of STDS and in a monogamous r/l you may to opt to do this.
💉 The hepatitis B vaccine is given to prevent the severe liver disease that can be passed rom mama to baby if mom is infected. The 1st of a series of 3 is given within 24 hours after birth.

What did you do with yours?
The placenta, the root of your origin, is a miraculous organ that shares and protects your life. It is the conductor that unites you with your mother and serves as the control panel of the womb-ship that sustains you until you are born. It was conceived at the moment of your genesis. Your placenta is genetically identical to you. No one, except your placenta, has ever been so perfectly, exactly you.
Aura turned one on May 22nd and we finally buried her placenta with a young hydrangea bush, which has been her favorite flower all spring (see a few posts back).
It was incredibly emotional for me. A full circle moment. I felt all of the feelings of our birth and more. So grateful to have these beautiful photos.
