I made this tree chart showing the most important correlations, including "domain estimated traffic." Most of us look at that to judge the authority or trust of a webpage, and you can see that it matches with one page's ability to rank based on the site it's on.

The study identified the most important rank signal as using common words and phrases related to the main keyword. This has a huge impact on on-page signals, perhaps even bigger than how the KW appears in title and H tags.

In other words, Google is using NLP and wants to see that your page has the important topics or entities found on the other top-ranked pages. They match bigrams, trigrams, etc.; another way of thinking of this is that they are topics and entities.
