Oscar E. Berninghaus (1874–1952) was an American painter best known as a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists. Born in St. Louis, he began his career in commercial art before discovering Taos, New Mexico, in 1899—a place whose vibrant light, landscape, and Native cultures became his lifelong inspiration. Berninghaus dedicated his work to capturing the spirit of the American Southwest, creating vivid scenes of Pueblo life, cowboys, and rugged terrain that remain celebrated today.
