Engage your senses when checking the transmission fluid. If it is dirty, darkly colored, or smells acrid or burnt, it needs replacing. Transmission fluid in good condition smells slightly sweet, is red, and is clear.

The fluid in your automatic transmission does more than just lubricate the gears. This same fluid is pumped around to various components to engage or disengage them. It’s even used as a power transfer media in the torque converter to get the power into the transmission.

For years, transmissions were either manual or automatic, but new shifters (such as sports sticks) are a cross between them. These transmissions are more complicated, but don’t worry. A transmission expert will be able to keep them in good repair.
