“Yeah, I was gonna go to the meeting, but I really don’t wanna.” Yeah? Gonna? Wanna? Far too many of our students use these words in their regular business conversations and even in their emails. They may have learned somewhere that using these slang words for “yes,” “going to” and “want to” makes them sound more like a native English speaker.

And that simply isn’t true. While it may be fine to use these words in casual conversation or with co-workers that you know well, they have no place in a business context. They make you sound less professional and can even make the listener feel like you are showing a lack of respect.

Yes, doing business in countries like the U.S. may be less formal than in other countries, but there are still some basic rules to follow. How you communicate with others reflects directly on who you are as a professional. Always “put your best foot forward” (behave well to make a good impression).
