I know it’s not just me….. This year has been tragic to watch as more than 305K employees have been laid off (Forbes).

I know this feeling, and have no doubt employees across various industries have been extremely stressed, wondering, “Will I be next?” “Is my company impacted too?”

Layoffs are not fun, in fact, they can turn your whole life upside down. Remember this - you can’t control the outcome, only what you choose to do next. Here are few dos and don’ts:

1) Don’t apply for a massive number of jobs – name a person this has worked for and change my mind. Tap into the “hidden job market” – YouTube has loads of info on this!

2) Kick basic networking to the curb and explore/research ways to actually stand out (recruiters are human and can only respond to so many, “I like your posts, could you please pass my resume to the hiring manager?”). Whether you’re offering value in your networking approach or showcasing a high-value personal brand, each approach includes VALUE!

3) Fine tune your search, resume, target employer list, personal brand, LinkedIn page, messaging, etc. MANY people have transferrable skills, MANY people could technically do more than one role, and MANY people have multiple interests; however, you cannot afford to be positioned as a Generalist or Jack/Jill of All Trades.

4) Invest before it’s too late. Don’t deplete your resources before you decide to invest in a resume writer or career coach. You must understand that competition is at an all-time high – look it up, it’s true! Consider starting your process with a competitive edge by investing into your future before spending endless hours on the job search to no end.

She doesn’t believe in 9-5 | He feels like he’s being overlooked because he doesn’t have a degree | She feels burnt out on the job-hunting process | He feels like he’s failing his family | She wants to be treated equally in the workplace | He got passed up for a promotion over someone younger | She got laid off after 3 months | He felt scrutinized by a micromanager

In the moment, these feelings can be all consuming – but 5 years from now, they may seem insignificant. When these thoughts crowd your mind, look at what you can control:

1) Quality of your job applications (Customizing your resume, cover letters, and communications to hiring managers) 🎯
2) Networking 💭
3) Interview preparation and the way you carry yourself (enthusiasm, confidence, grace) ✏️
4) Trainings, certifications, or education you work towards 💡
5) Prayers and faith towards God ✝️

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 (on your resume/LinkedIn profile) and who you want to help you during this next season of life. Someone who appreciates your efforts, takes time to get to know you/your goals, and is honest about whether or not they will be a good fit to partner with makes all the difference (I have turned people down in certain industries or who already have great resumes and just need a few tips to improve it).
