Israeli film director Nadav Lapid is one of the most vocal critics of Netanyahu’s government. His latest film is literally a satire condemning Israeli society’s role in Gaza. He lives in France. He is, by every measure, exactly the kind of Israeli voice the pro-Palestinian movement claims to want amplified.

And yet — he was pressured out of a jury seat at the Marseille International Film Festival because filmmakers threatened to pull their films if he participated. Why? Because his film received partial funding from the Israeli Film Fund.

That’s when you know this was never about policy. It was never about the war. It was about his passport.

Natalie Portman, along with French directors Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) and Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez) signed an open letter condemning the boycott. And they deserve credit for it.

Boycotting a Jewish artist for existing — even one who openly opposes his own government — is antisemitism dressed up as activism. Full stop.
