Writing is sculpting a body of words like a block of marble from a mass. Finding the figure within as sculptors have done or painters find the figure on the canvas after much repainting, the writer develops a body of words, then sculpts them to find what they mean, how to array their parts in a coherent order, and put in a style invented, which emerges along the way. The finished work is always a given for the reader, but it has been through countless stages.
