The other night, I had a dream that I was in a crowded room with a bunch of angry people screaming at each other. I didn’t have my noise-canceling headphones with me or any other way to escape. I woke up from that nightmare experiencing a full-blown anxiety attack, sweating profusely, with my heart pounding so fast I couldn’t catch my breath. Physically, I wasn’t in a loud, crowded room; I was comfortably under the covers in my quiet bedroom. So, why was I freaking out?

Where I am physically and where I am in my mind have nothing to do with one another. That experience of having a panic attack while alone in my room because of loud noises in my head (yet also being able to stand in the middle of Manhattan during rush hour and stay as calm as can be), just reaffirmed for me that where I am in my mind is far more important than what’s going on around me.

Through repetition, we can train our minds to remain calm in any situation. Always staying calm might not be the most appropriate response in a true emergency, but I’d rather be too calm than react to daily inconveniences as if each was a natural disaster.
It’s amazing that we need to take driver’s education, get a license, and buy insurance to drive a car, yet we get no training on how to use the most powerful tool we have: our minds.
Let’s bring awareness to where our thoughts go when left on autopilot. I’m still training myself to pause whenever I feel uneasy, breathe deeply, and ask myself, “What thought can I choose in this moment that would be more beneficial?”

Reclaiming that navigational power is a huge step. Let’s take it together.
