Take Charge Coaching

I've been a little slow in the career arena lately due to a recent knee surgery. However that doesn't stop me from talking about career issues during my physical therapy sessions. Today my therapist told me what I always tell my clients. The only people they hire are people who have interned with them in the past. They don't even post positions online. So particularly if you are a student, take the initiative to get an internship (paid or unpaid) where you hope to work some day. You will get great experience and very likely your first real job in your profession.

Today I met a lovely woman from Algeria who was an engineer there and is searching for a Java developer positionhere in the U.S. In her country it is not normal to "brag" about yourself, but here I told her you need to let people know how good you can be at your job! She is bilingual in French and English and is extremely bright. She even won a "contest" to gain entrance and a green card to the U.S. I am hoping her job search will be short.

One of my clients told me today that she applied to four positions in one day with her new resume, then got three responses for interviews the very next day, and soon afterward got two offers! She ended up staying at her current position because they gave her a substantial raise! Go figure!
