K9 Ranger with the Soddy Daisy Police Department reminds us that rainy days are for napping!

Looking at him now it's hard to believe this is the same dog who was once nearly starved to death before retired officer and current instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Lt Dowdy stepped in and refused to give up on him.

Today, he’s warm, safe, loved, and curled up under a blanket after another day of giving everything he has. Ranger is the definition of resilience—a dog with an endless drive, an enormous heart, and a future that almost never happened.

Seeing him this comfortable will never get old. He reminds us that even the hardest beginnings don’t have to define the rest of the story. We love you, Ranger. And to the Dowdy family who's gotten to see him in his new life- you can tell he will never forget what you did for him. And neither will we

K9 Casper with the Clark-Pleasant Police Department is looking exceptionally handsome in his yearbook photo!

K9 Casper works for a school police department that he helps keep safe everyday, but he's become more than just a police dog—he’s a friend, a comfort, a protector, and an ambassador. Because behind those brilliant blue eyes is an incredibly talented dog that is trained in narcotics detection, gun detection, tracking and also serves as a therapy dog. Working in a school, he can do everything a police puppers could possibly be expected to on any given day.

He didn't get there the easy way though. This super friendly and super energetic dog found himself not once but twice at the Hendricks County Animal Shelter after being dumped. Back then he was known as "Jolly", but now he has a new name for a new life. Incredibly sweet, super high energy and always ready for a party- he was our first official "shelter to shield" dog when we officially founded the ranch.

Recently, Casper and his handler were named "Officer of the Year" for their department, and we couldn’t be prouder. For a dog that was abandoned not once, but twice, to now be recognized for the difference he makes every day is something special. Casper is proof that every dog deserves a chance. He’s a wonderful police dog, a trusted partner, and most importantly, a genuinely good boy who makes everyone around him smile.

The world lost a very good dog this weekend. Well all dogs are good dogs and some dogs are police dogs, but then every once in a while, there’s a dog that becomes a legend.

This weekend, retired K9 Zeus of the Brownsburg Community School Corporation passed away at home, surrounded by the family that loved him.

Zeus was Indiana’s first ever school-based police K9, and alongside Officer K, he became a familiar face to literally thousands of children. For years students walked through those hallways knowing and loving Zeus. He watched thousands of kids grow up, he made police officers more approachable and he made schools safer. He also did it all while carrying himself like he owned the place.

Which, if we’re being honest, he pretty much did.

Zeus had a HUGE personality. He loved people and going to work- but he never seemed to question for a second who was in charge of any room he entered. He was sweet, loyal, and incredibly social, but there was always a swagger to him. It was the Zeus Show, and everyone else was just part of the cast.

Even after retirement, he never completely hung it up. Every now and then he’d show up at training and remind everyone that the old man could still get it done. (Video in the comments)

What made Zeus special wasn’t just what he accomplished. It was the bond he had with Officer K. Anyone who knows her knows exactly what I’m talking about. She cares deeply about people, about her community and about her dogs. Long before Redemption Ranch existed as anything more than an idea scribbled on paper and a lot of unrealistic optimism, she was one of the people who believed in it. That’s who she is.

On a personal note, I don’t think Zeus ever knew how much he influenced my life, but I owe him a ton. As does every dog that goes through our course

Years ago, I was done. Not “thinking about it. Done. I was loading up in the parking lot after canine training, loading my stuff into my vehicle and preparing to quit law enforcement altogether. I was frustrated, burned out, angry at department politics, and tired of being told everything I believed about working dogs was wrong.

Officer K found me in that parking lot and talked me off the ledge. I don’t know if she remembers every detail of that conversation, but I do. That conversation changed the trajectory of my life, which wouldn't have happened without how much I respected Officer K and Zeus.

So when I think about Zeus, I don’t just think about a police dog. I think about a dog that helped build trust between police and a community and a dog that touched thousands of lives without ever realizing it. That’s a pretty incredible legacy.

The funny thing about K9s is they never understand the impact they leave behind. They don’t know about awards, records, firsts, or accomplishments. They don’t know how many people they’ll be remembered by. They just show up every day, do their job, love their family, and give us everything they have.

But we know. And because we know, we remember. One thing for certain in this life is that when we leave this world, the people who love us will miss us. And Zeus you are deeply missed.

We’ll see you again in a land just west of where the sun sets, where the grass is always green, the tennis balls never wear out, and legends never die. I'm sure you're already there- and have already made sure everyone knows that you're in charge. Rest easy old friend.

You served your community well. You made your handler proud. You made a difference.

Massive thank you to Indy Honor Flight for inviting us to their monthly reunion breakfast to talk about the work we do at the ranch.

Honor Flight does truly incredible work, ensuring our nation’s veterans receive the recognition and gratitude they have earned through a once-in-a-lifetime trip to visit the memorials built in their honor. It is always a privilege to get to speak to them.

I have been blessed to serve as a guardian on six Honor Flights and have also participated in numerous police escorts to and from the airport alongside my fellow officers from Plainfield PD. Every flight is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who served our country. Thanks again for having us.

Jocko was happy to tag along too as he got non stop butt scratches from the group.

Two great dogs- one great friendship!

Jessie is Jocko's long time best friend. She was recently named Rescue Dog of the Month by the Golden Retriever Coffee Company and now has treat bags named after her! If you’ve ever met her at the dog park, you already know why. She’s the undisputed queen of the park, loved by every dog and every person she meets. She walks in like royalty and all her loyal subjects always fawn over her - especially me.

Jessie's story is also a reminder of what rescue is really about, having been adopted through Golden Retriever Rescue & Community Education of Indiana. Behind every rescued dog is a family that opens their heart and changes a life forever. Her dad, Don, became a good friend and is deeply missed, but his kindness lives on through Jesse and through Marilyn, who continues to support rescue dogs and donated some of her treats to Redemption Ranch. We are grateful for her friendship and generosity. They can often be spotted at community events or veteran events as Jessie and Marilyn do tons of therapy work.

If you’d like to support Jesse’s rescue organization, Grace Golden Retriever Rescue, we’ll drop a link to her treat store in the comments. Every purchase helps more deserving dogs find the second chance they deserve. If you order select "Jessie's treats benefiting Grace" and then whichever flavor of treats your doggo would like

Thank you to Jessie and Marilyn for being such great friends to Redemption Ranch. Don’s kindness, generosity, and love for dogs left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, and we’re grateful to have called him a friend. Don believed in giving dogs a chance, and his legacy continues through Jesse and the countless lives touched by his compassion.

New department portrait just dropped! Check out this good boi! K9 Remi with the City of Delphi, Indiana Police Department showing off his movie star level of good looks!

Behind that handsome face is a dog whose story could have ended very differently. Remi is a high-drive working-line German Shepherd who found himself on the brink, but thanks to the intervention of Ofc Hawk with the Plainfield Police Department and his family, Remi never had to face that uncertainty. They opened their home, treated him like family, and gave him the chance he deserved when it mattered most until we could get him placed.

Today, Remi has found exactly what he was searching for all along: his peace, his home, and his partner. The dog who once faced an uncertain future is now doing exactly what he was born to do, alongside someone who loves him deeply and believes in him completely.

Some dogs find a job. Remi found where he belongs.

K9 Knox continues to wage his one dog war against his ring toy. While he still hasn't quite figured out an easier way to carry it- he has mastered the "confidence is king" part of how to handle himself in a crisis!

It's hard to believe that anybody could ever have given up a dog like this. Before we found him he was a stray dog living in the snow under a semi trailer near the Shelbyville casino. Barely surviving off of chicken nuggets that people were throwing at him until the good folks at the Shelbyville/Shelby County Animal Shelter were able to get him contained in a humane trap. From there he was taken to the safety of the shelter where the staff there knew he was meant for more.

Today K9 Knox proudly serves alongside his human at the Brown County Sheriff's Office - Indiana , where he has built a tremendous reputation as a narcotics detection and tracking dog. While at work he is all business, these dogs no matter the drive always have a slightly derpy side to them after they've found their people.

From a scared and frozen pup to now a proud deputy, K9 Knox clearly has life figured out, even if his battle of confidence versus geometry remains unresolved

K9 Kilo- How it started. How it’s going.

Somewhere in Indianapolis, in the middle of a winter storm, somebody wrapped a chain around Kilo and tied him to a dumpster. Then they walked away.

They left him there in the cold with nothing but the weather and whatever time he had left. By the time he was found, he was nearly frozen to death and so thin you could count every rib. That’s how his story was supposed to end: alone, hungry, and forgotten. And it almost did.

Once taken to a shelter, he was given a bowl of food for the first time in who knows how long. When given food he growled over his food bowl which labeled him aggressive and marked him for euthanasia. That's not aggression, that's survival.

Thankfully a dedicated volunteer at the shelter knew this "unadoptable" dog was meant for more and got ahold of us. Easiest decision ever. We would also like to thank our good friend Erica and her family who fostered him until we could find him a working home. They not only housed him, but got him the care, love and treatments he needed. We would also like to thank the amazing team at Healthy Paws Animal Hospital for all their care bringing him back from the brink. (Pics in the comments to see just how dangerously skinny he was)

As soon as you meet Kilo you are instantly struck by how sweet he is, and how intelligent. Today, the picture on the right tells the rest of the story. No chain, with a healthy weight, a smile on his face and no fear.

Just a police K9 with a family that loves him, a home where he’s cherished, and a purpose bigger than anyone could have imagined on the day he was scheduled to die.

Where the world looked at Kilo and saw a liability, we looked at him and saw potential. He and his handler excelled in our training academy and it was clear these two were meant for each other. The Wolcott Police Department is lucky to have them both.

Every time Kilo climbs into that patrol vehicle he will never know the fact that wasn't supposed to have this life. He was supposed to die nameless, freezing beside a dumpster in a winter storm or in some cold shelter back room. Instead, he stands between danger and complete strangers he’ll never meet, asks for nothing in return but some head scratches and throwing his toy, and comes home to people who call him family. The world threw him away, but the same world is safer because he survived it.

From death row to duty. Kilo, we’re proud to see you living the life you were never supposed to have.
