Homeschool Days. Farm Animal Chaos. Slow Country living. Building a Life that feels like home.

This week is a big one on the farm! 🐣

If all goes well, we should have baby chicks hatching later this week. Thursday is day 21 — hatch day! We started small with just 5 eggs.

Time to get the brooder ready and waiting (not so patiently) for those little peeps. šŸ’›

Farm life after a storm doesn’t mean slowing down… it means getting to work. šŸŒ§ļø

We finally got a good bit of rain last night, but with that comes the usual cleanup. Thankfully, we didn’t have any major damage, just yard debris and a few big branches down around the property.

Today’s chores look a little different. We’re clearing debris and making sure all of the animals and their enclosures are ready for another round of heavy rain and winds expected tonight.

This lifestyle teaches you to always prepare for the next storm.

We know some farms weren’t so lucky, and we’re keeping them in our prayers today. ā¤ļøšŸŒ¾

Let’s be honest for a second… farm life isn’t always aesthetic barns and Pinterest-perfect chicken coops.

Most of the time, it looks like this.

Housing farm animals often means reusing and repurposing whatever materials you already have laying around. Building things with random materials takes a little creativity.

This barn was originally built for horses, so we had to enclose one of the stalls to turn it into a chicken coop. We reused plywood we already had, fixed the door, added hardware cloth/chicken wire, and covered every gap and opening we could find.

Is it perfect? No, but for us, yes.

It’s safe, it works, and it gives our chickens protection from predators. We still have some finishing touches to do and fencing to add for their outside area, but we’re getting there.

Farm life is a lot of figuring things out as you go and doing the best you can with what you have.

And it definitely helps having a supportive and handy husband who makes sure things get done.

Long, busy day. Beautiful sunset. šŸŒ…

Calling it a night and getting ready to do it all over again tomorrow.

Busy day getting work done in the barn while the boys help… and play, of course 🌾
Wouldn’t trade these days for anything.

I’m curious…

What’s one thing you had growing up that kids today don’t get enough of?

For me it’s: Playing outside until it’s dark.

Sometimes I wonder if we’ll ever get tired of eggs for breakfast.

But then the boys go grab a few eggs straight from the nesting box, come inside, and scramble them up themselves… and somehow it never gets old. šŸ„ššŸ³

Fresh eggs, capable kids, and slow mornings at home.

Do your kids like helping cook in the kitchen?

Golden hour at Mobley Roots Farmstead just feels different. ā˜€ļø

The animals are fed, the kids are still running around outside, and for a few minutes the whole place slows down.

Anyone else feel like golden hour is the most peaceful part of the day?

A little more progress with getting the barn ready to move the animals in… worked on predator proofing the chickens stall!

Morning chores. Muddy crocs. Chicken Besties.

POV: You can’t build anything around here without hiring the tiniest contractor. šŸ”§šŸ› ļø

He may not know what we’re building…but he knows he’s in charge.

Sunshine + projects + my little helper = the best kind of day. ā˜€ļø

Anyone else have a ā€œsupervisorā€ who insists on being involved in everything?
