The swing-era music my grandmother loved had a way of filling the room with energy. Those bright horns and driving rhythms always felt joyful and alive.

Lionel Hampton’s Jivin’ the Vibes carries that playful groove so well. The vibraphone dances through the music, and it’s easy to hear why this era made people want to move.

Looking back, these early sounds helped shape my love for rhythm and musical energy.

One of the first albums I remember truly loving was Disco Mickey. I had the cassette and would play it over and over in my bedroom.

Songs like “The Greatest Band” and “Welcome to Rio” completely pulled me into their stories. I’d imagine the scenes from the lyrics and pretend I was one of the characters, acting them out while the music played on repeat.

It might seem funny now, but at the time it felt magical — music and imagination all happening together in my little world.

I remember being out on the preschool playground and hearing this song blasting from somewhere next door.
The neighbors would play it loud, and I’d start dancing out there on the playground, trying to figure out where it was coming from and who was playing it.

I never did solve that mystery.

But the feeling stuck with me — that kind of music that fills the air and makes everything feel a little more alive.

Michael Jackson had a strong influence on me from an early age.
I remember hearing this when I was about four — it seemed like it was everywhere for a while.

One of my earliest musical influences came from my grandmother, who loved the big band era.
I remember hearing this and being drawn to the rhythm, the lift, and the way music could move a room.

Long before I understood genres or mixing — I was learning how energy travels through sound.
