Happy Memorial Day!
I have social anxiety. It's not something that's been full frontal before coming to The Villages, where there are a bajillion social activities. I'm sharing this because I know I'm not the only one--according to ChatGPT, 15 million Americans deal with SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder). And the truth is there are many unhealthy ways to deal with it, including booze and isolation. I now realize it was NOT a coincidence that I was able to give up alcohol for a year+ during the Pandemic.
I'm missing out which is different from FOMO because I'm missing out on enjoying the things I love to do due to irrational fears. So now that this is on my radar, I'm trying an experiment to see if I can remedy my social anxiety by facing it head-on. In a follow-up post, I'll share a little about what I believe to be the origin of these fears, how the experiment is going (hint: I need suggestions on a magical deodorant), and why I think I have this fear (hint: I was the last to be picked for dodgeball and the first to be targeted). Meanwhile, it would be amazing to hear of your experiences with social anxiety and what's worked or not worked to overcome them.
