The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program is seeking public comment on their Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (DSEIS). Today, along with other members of the program’s Executive Steering Group I got a preview of the DSEIS which provides details about various bridge elements and impacts on travel times, climate, and community. On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we honor the brave service members who remain unaccounted for and the families waiting for their loved ones to come home. For more than 80,000 Americans, the uncertainty continues—a reminder of the sacrifices they continue to make, and the responsibility we have to them.
Growing up I heard stories of both my grandfathers’ service in World War II. One fought in the Pacific Theatre, enduring unimaginable hardships, while the other, a Black serviceman, faced discrimination in uniform, only able to eat in Portland Chinese restaurants, as he was refused service in most others. Veterans in Portland still face many challenges; houselessness, both visible and invisible disabilities, jobs, and more. They deserve our respect, and our attention every day.
Today, we hold these families especially close in our hearts. If you’re looking to give back, please consider volunteering or donating to local American Legion posts, or other Veterans’ organizations. Support your local veteran serving organizations:
