On 3 March 2022, Susan Oboh, a final-year student at the University of Benin, passed away after being shot by armed robbers. Oboh was seeing off a visitor in the Osasogie area, a community close to the university gate. On 7 March, the student community gathered for a candlelight procession to honor her. The issue of insecurity remains a concern for Nigeria. Besides the Boko Haram terrorist group, armed gangs, kidnappers, community clashes and separatist groups have exacerbated the insecurity situation in the country. The 2021 Global Peace Index produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace has ranked Nigeria 146 among 163 independent nations and territories according to its level of peacefulness.

The Hausa people of northern Nigeria have their own Indigenous fighting style known as Dambe. Typically, throughout a match, each fighter tries to throw their opponent to the ground in order to completely overpower them.
