With the pandemic came closed doors, and our beloved Fishbowl in 4th Ave. has been off limits. That's why We in Computer Science started the 'Virtual Fishbowls': to promote togetherness in the era of social distancing.
Using Gather, a 2D video platform, we've made an interactive space for our community to hangout and keep in touch. This is just one of many things WiCS has done to promote community in our department.

Join us Friday 12 - 1:30 PM for our April Town Hall: a watch party on Coded Bias! We’ll be watching as a group at https://pdx.zoom.us/j/8369214908.
Modern society sits at the intersection of two crucial questions: What does it mean when artificial intelligence increasingly governs our liberties? And what are the consequences for the people AI is biased against? When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that many facial recognition technologies do not accurately detect darker-skinned faces or classify the faces of women, she delves into an investigation of widespread bias in algorithms. As it turns out, artificial intelligence is not neutral, and women are leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected.

Yes, this is the same Ada that our favorite linux server is named after!
Although Ada Lovelace earned little public recognition during her lifetime, she is now considered a pioneer and prophet of the computer age. Although many men of the time feared “the very great tension of mind which [sophisticated mathematics] requires is beyond a woman’s physical power,” Lovelace viewed things differently, writing: “Nothing but a very close and intense application to subjects of a scientific nature now seems at all to keep my imagination from running wild, or to stop the voice which seems to be left in my mind.” bit.ly/3rrwWCU
