🇺🇸 Independence Day Checklist for Pets! 🐾❤️

The Fourth of July is one of the busiest (and unfortunately one of the most dangerous) holidays for pets. Every year, animal shelters see a significant increase in lost dogs and cats because frightened pets panic during fireworks and run away from home. Even the most well-trained dog can bolt when startled. Unfortunately, in a state of panic dogs can go thru windows, chew thru doors or dart thru traffic without concerns. A panicked dog can be put into a position of serious injuries or worse 😞

Being prepared now can make all the difference when the festivities begin.

🐾 Keep pets indoors. Even dogs who normally enjoy spending time outside should be brought inside before fireworks begin. Close curtains or blinds to help muffle the flashes and sounds. If they need to go outside for a potty break. Keep them secure on a leash and stay with them (do not leave them unattended).

🏡 Create a safe space. Set up a quiet room with their favorite bed, blankets, toys, or even a TV or white noise to help mask the fireworks (fans help!). Staying with your pet, if possible, can also help reduce their anxiety. Cuddles on the couch with your favorite Netflix show on high volume.

🏷️ Check ID tags and microchips. Make sure your pet’s collar fits properly, the contact information is current, and their microchip is registered with up-to-date phone numbers. If the unthinkable happens, these simple steps greatly increase the chances of a safe return.

🚪 Secure your property. Before guests arrive, double-check all gates, fences, and doors. Holiday parties mean people are constantly coming and going, and visitors may not realize that a dog or cat is waiting for the perfect opportunity to slip outside. One of the easiest ways to add an extra layer of protection is to place a baby gate inside your doorway. Even if the front door is opened unexpectedly, that extra barrier can give you precious seconds to stop your pet from escaping.

💊 Talk to your veterinarian now if your pet struggles with fireworks. Don’t wait until July 4th. Your veterinarian can discuss safe options for managing anxiety, whether that’s medication, supplements, or behavior strategies. The earlier you prepare, the better.

🏃‍♂️ Exercise! Take you dog on a nice long walk or run to burn off some excess energy. Be mindful of weather conditions and heat. Bit, if you have an opportunity to help physically wear your pup out. That will increase their comfort level later.

🧩 Mind Games and Puzzle toys will help with mental stimulation and help with distraction. Feed your dogs dinner out of a treat dispensing toy. Or use their dinner to stuff a kong or Topple to keep them busy.

The goal is for every pet to enjoy a safe holiday at home with the people who love them. A few minutes of preparation today can prevent a heartbreaking emergency tomorrow.

Have a safe, fun, and pet-friendly Independence Day! 🇺🇸❤️🐾

Meet Taz 🌪 This sweet little Malipoo fluff visited recently (this is his fourth grooming appointment with me). He first started coming at 10 weeks old and has consistently visited every 6-8 weeks since. He is an absolute Stuperstar on getting accustomed to the the ropes of grooming. Since this experience will be a life long commitment for him. It's so important to start positive ✨️ Just a few snips of his entire grooming appointment. Look at how amazing he is ❤️

------

I'll say it time and time again... Starting your new puppy with the grooming experience early—ideally around 8–12 weeks of age or right after their first two rounds of vaccinations—is so vital!

Starting your puppy on the grooming experience early helps build positive associations, prevents future fear of handling, makes routine care manageable.

➡️ Reduces Fear and Builds Trust.
Puppies are highly impressionable during their early socialization window. Exposing them gradually to strange smells, vibrations from clippers, and the hum of blow dryers teaches them that these new sensations are completely harmless.
➡️ Starting early makes future grooming sessions much smoother and less stressful
➡️ Helps Them Accept Close Handling. Grooming requires touching sensitive areas like paws, tails, ears, and bellies. Early handling teaches your pup that being touched, brushed, or restrained is normal. This desensitization also makes future trips to the veterinarian or nail trims at home significantly easier.
➡️ Prevents Severe Coat Issues. As puppies shed their soft baby fur, their adult coat comes in. Regular, early brushing and bathing manage this coat transition, preventing painful mats and tangles from forming. 💥 This is especially critical for long-haired and continuously growing breeds like Poodles, Shih Tzus, and Doodles.

As we're creeping further into summer... I'm already seeing this happening. Let's discuss; Leaving dogs in hot cars. 🙅‍♀️ Just don't do it!

Leaving a dog in a parked car is incredibly dangerous and can be fatal in minutes. ☠️ Even on a mild 70° F day, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach over 110° F within less than an hour. ⏰️

Even if "it’s just for a moment", and even if the windows are cracked, it is never safe to leave an animal in a parked vehicle. 🚫 Cracking the windows does not prevent this rapid temperature spike. Not only can leaving an animal in a hot car lead to fatal heat stroke, but it is also illegal in several states! ‼️

If it's too warm for you, it's most certainly too warm for your dog. 🥵 Unlike humans, dogs cannot easily regulate their body temperature, making them highly susceptible to heatstroke.

⚠️If you see a dog in a hot car; Act Quickly!!
Note the car's make, model, color, and license plate number. 🚗
⚠️Alert Businesses: If the car is near a store, quickly go to the service desk or management and ask them to page the owner over the intercom.🚨
⚠️Call Authorities: Call the local police department or animal control's non-emergency number right away.🚓👮‍♂️
⚠️Know Your Rights: Many states (including California, Colorado, and Florida) have "Good Samaritan" laws. In California, for example, you have the legal right to break into a locked vehicle to rescue an animal in immediate danger, provided you call law enforcement first and stay with the animal until they arrive.
⚠️If you suspect a rescued dog is suffering from heatstroke (symptoms include heavy panting, excessive drooling, bright red gums, or collapse), move them to a cool, shaded area, provide small amounts of fresh luke warm water, and contact an emergency veterinary professional.👩‍⚕️

You are your dogs best advocate. If you truly love them, LEAVE THEM AT HOME!! All it takes is "one time" , one "accident" to have your best friend lost, your windows smashed and possible legal action. Just don't do it! Your pet will be happier at home in the air conditioning.
