Las varitas mágicas se usan tradicionalmente para convocar y conectar con ángeles y genios, pero más tarde también se usaron para impregnar de magia en general. Las varitas tienen un propósito similar a las athames (dagas y/o armas arcángelicas), aunque los dos objetos tienen sus usos distintos: se usa un athame para mandar, mientras que una varita se considera más suave y se usa para invitar o animar. Todas las varitas son hechas a base de alguna madera y tiene que estar acompañada de materiales de confección natural; nunca con algún material sólid como la plata, bronce u oro; esto podría causar que nuestra varita no funcione al 100%. La varita se utiliza más para el trabajo mágico relativo a la comunicación, la acción material y proyectos en el mundo físico, es decir para comunicar una intención al universo así como la culminación de un mantra y/ritual. También se puede usar para dirigir el poder de curación. A menudo se utilizan para «crear un círculo de protección invisible» alrededor de los practicantes o de un espacio sagrado.
