What myths do you believe about marriage?

You (along with the rest of us) have been fed a lot of nonsense your whole life about what marriage is and feels like and should be.

While it can be quite enticing to believe certain marriage-myths, they actually harm more than help.

These are some common myths we’ve been convinced to believe about marriage:

1. My spouse and I will expect exactly the same things from marriage

2. Everything good in our relationship before marriage will get better once we are married

3. Everything bad in my life will disappear once I am married

4. My spouse will make me whole

How strongly did you agree with any of these myths? Do you wish they were true?

Most of us want this to be what we experience in a marriage. However, it paints an unrealistic picture.

It’s time to debunk these myths.

Truths:

1. Bringing incongruent expectations about marriage (i.e. unspoken rules & unconscious rules) out into the open can save years of wear and tear on a young marriage!

2. Many things improve once married, but some things become more difficult. At some point, you will lose the airbrushed version of your partner. The good news: disenchantment enables you as a couple to move into a deeper intimacy.

3. Marriage does not erase personal pain or eliminate loneliness. It is not a substitute for the difficult work of personal change and healing.

4. Just because your partner doesn’t end up “completing you,” doesn’t mean you married the wrong person.

The success of a marriage comes not in having found the “right” person, but in the ability of both partners to adjust to the real person they inevitably realize they married.

These unrealistic expectations about marriage are pretty well engrained in us. Do you know how to rewire your brain to believe more realistic ?

In premarital coaching (coupled or individual), we dive deep on these (and more) topics to better understand how to approach this overly-romanticized union with more clarity, depth, and purpose.
