My experience: Amateur Athlete for over 30 years. Amateur hockey team director, manager and captain for 6 years. Police Officer & Detective for 12 years. Technology Entrepreneur for 20 years. Health, Fitness, Nutrition & Wellness Entrepreneur for over 20 years. My philosophy when it come to health, fitness, nutrition, wellness and performance is show me the evidence! Just the facts Ma'am! There are far too many snake oil sales people in this world selling bad advice and solutions! Trust must always be earned and validated.
I have been an amateur athlete (mostly ice hockey) all of my life. I began skating at 3 yrs old and playing organized hockey by age 10. I bought my first weight set at age 15 and began to teach myself about fitness and nutrition. My motivation at that time was to perform at the highest level that I could and prevent myself from getting injured. At 5’9 I was on the short side for a hockey player at that time, so I worked even harder to build muscle so that I could withstand the very physical aspects of hockey. I played baseball, soccer, lacrosse, ran track, biked, bladed and was a down hill snow skier when I was not playing ice hockey.
I read many nutrition books and quickly became fascinated with how my recovery and performance increased with diet changes and conditioning tweaks. I was able to put on about 15-20 pounds of muscle in my high school years and even though I played hockey 3-5 times a week, I was able to avoid serious injuries for many years. By my early 30’s I was 5’9 and 185-190 with a lot of lean tone muscle. I was able to perform at a much higher level when my diet was on point and my conditioning routine was optimum. Personalizing my training and recording my personal health information was difficult to maintain. I did maintain a journal on everything I did and ate for a long time. I would spend hours analyzing my meal plans and snacks to make sure my essential nutrients were balanced. I also experimented with natural supplements and shopped at GNC for over 20 years until I discovered plant based organic supplements through two different nature path doctors.
I played hockey right up to age 35 when I completely severed my ACL playing hockey. This injury required a complete ACL reconstruction surgery. My knee rehabilitation took over a year. Even though I had returned to full range of motion and strength after 12 months of rehabilitation, I was not 100%. I ended up leaving detective work when I realized that I may not fully recover and did not want to sit at a desk for my last 20 years. Within 18 months of my initial surgery I had torn my ACL a second time. I had many severe complications and was in pain quite a bit.
