The love for dogs has no age limits & our beloved Barney shows us that every day. đź’ś
Barney was listed as 25-01104 at a high kill shelter in CA & he had until 2:00 pm 8/2/24 to find a commitment or he would lose his precious life.
It appeared a very long time ago that at some stage in Barney’s life he was cared for as he was already neutered & had a microchip & was registered with the name Barney. That’s where the happiness ended for Barney. Clearly the people who did these things did not come for him.
We know he was 12 years old, he had to of spent his life living outside in the filth. He was riddled with fleas & who knows the last time he was bathed & groomed as his intake pictures screams the sadness & neglect this boy has lived through.
We wanted to rescue Barney & had our beloved foster Margret Price in CA but needed one in WA. Then there she was the beautiful Nicole Dossey.
We reached out to the shelter & they let us know no one was coming for Barney, but oh yes they were. A team of people were fighting for Barney as he deserved to be loved & cherished & above all treated with the respect he deserved. He was booked into our vets, a grooming appointment was set up for him even before he had left the shelter.
We got Barney out as he was not going to die in, the shelter. The state of this poor boy was soul destroying. Of course he was a little cantankerous at first & who could blame him because he stunk, was a matted mess, he had fecis stuck to him. Goopy eyes, hardly any teeth & clearly was hurting.
Straight to the groomer he went & he did amazing. Then off to his new journey with his beloved foster mum Margaret. He was given homemade food, which he devoured. Barney was introduced to a bed & blankets, & didn't know what to do with the bed. It became evident that he had not been sleeping on anything while outside.
The next day he went to our vets & he got blood work, x-rays. Shots for allergies, pain meds for his back, a full checkup. Then we got the devastating news that Barney had an enlarged heart & he didn't have long left to live. His mouth was rotten, & the three remaining teeth that he had left needed to come out. Blood work also showed he had a urinary infection and was put on meds. He needed to get well before he could go under anesthesia, get him onto heart meds & go from there. The neglect here rips your soul out.
Well let us say, Barney boy had a new lease on life. At first he would struggle to breath & shiver & couldn’t walk too far so his foster mum would put him in the stroller so he could still be apart of the pack on the walks & enjoy himself.
Well guess what? He started feeling better & loved. He wanted to go for walks himself which turned into trots & was able to get his dental done & those teeth were just disgusting & causing him so much grief. Here is where the will of a dog never ceases to amaze you. Our vets said “he is going to take back what he said.” Barney now only has a grade 1 heart murmur & the rest of his life ahead of him. The determination of Barney & the love ❤️ for this boy is endless.
He was now healthy to come back to WA which he didn’t want to do at first, but how that has changed. His foster mum & nanna Zareen came to get him & take him to his new foster home. He will go sit next to his foster dad & when he is done will get up & do his own thing. He loves dogs & has his foster siblings & will follow them when it’s time to go potty & when it’s time to eat. Let’s face it, dogs never let him down as humans did. Barney will never be alone again & enjoys the days with his friends & foster family. He continues to get homemade food, a wonderful big backyard for him to enjoy himself in & of course come inside. We know that Barney was never shown love with touch as it’s all new to him but his foster family goes at his pace & Barney is so grateful to them. He has been learning what it is to be loved & how he should have always been living & loving life.
We want to say a big thank you to Penny Cooper because without this dedicated lady, posting & networking dogs such as Barney & his story they would not be seen & given the chance for someone to fight for them.
Then to the truly committed foster families for Barney, without these ladies Margaret & Nicole he would not be in our lives. We have so much love for you, for standing up for the Barney’s in the world & not giving up on this senior lad.
A big thank you goes to the people who wanted Barney out & pledged to help him. You are truly amazing.
Barney is on 2 medications for the remainder of his life & if you would like to donate for his monthly heart meds & his medication to stop him from dripping urine we would be beyond grateful & of course so would the distinguished Barney.
