Narragansett Bay Water Quality Improving Thanks to Less Sewage Treatment Plant Discharges NARRAGANSETT, R.I. — A team of oceanographers from the University of Rhode Island has completed a 10-year study of water quality in Narragansett Bay and found that reductions in nitrogen discharged into the bay from sewage treatment plants has resulted in much clearer water and fewer algae blooms.

Seaweed: Much More Than Beach Nuisance Red tendrils and green blades churn in the waves like a giant salad in a spinner. Thin, wiry branches ensnare the ankles of those who are brave enough to wade through the shallows. The water is lovely — you just have to make it past all the seaweed.

Southern New England's Horseshoe Crab Population Being Bled Dry Older than dinosaurs, horseshoe crabs have survived plenty. But human impact may be the threat that could wash them out of the Atlantic. For more than 350 million years, these living fossils have crawled ashore underneath the light of a full moon and laid their eggs in the sand.
