This past year, I've learned the difference between "acceptance" and "Allyship". Pride month is a great time to educate ourselves on the differences.
I've also learned about the alarming rate of mental health crises, su***de rates, bullying, and anxiety that LGBTQ youth face, especially as they navigate middle and high school. They need allies! Let's .
Here are some of the things an Ally will do versus just being an "Accepting" person:
🏳️🌈 An accepting person will respect the pronouns someone uses, whereas an Ally will correct the pronoun usage even if the person isn't around.
🏳️🌈 An accepting person might refrain from offensive behavior, whereas an Ally will not hesitate to correct someone else for insensitive behavior.
🏳️🌈 An accepting person will not knowingly discriminate based on gender identity, whereas an Ally will actively challenge and fight discrimination and prejudice.
This Pride Month, it's not just about celebrating; it's about educating ourselves. Seize this opportunity to learn new aspects of the LGBTQ+ community and make the shift from acceptance to Allyship. 🌈
