The atmosphere is becoming favorable for scattered thunderstorms to develop this afternoon, especially across parts of southern Minnesota and nearby areas.

Here's what you need to know:

Large hail (up to around quarter size or larger in the strongest storms)
Damaging wind gusts (50 to 70+ mph possible)
Heavy downpours and frequent lightning

The tornado threat is low, but not zero. A few storms could briefly rotate, meaning an isolated, short-lived tornado cannot be ruled out.

As temperatures continue to warm and the atmosphere becomes more unstable, storms are expected to increase in coverage through the afternoon. If storms organize more than expected, the Storm Prediction Center may issue a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of the area, with a 60% chance.
