Feral Root Bonsai
All Things Bonsai - Raw Beauty Rooted in Faith
06/07/2026
A bonsai doesn’t become beautiful overnight.
The trunk thickens slowly.
The branches develop gradually.
The roots strengthen beneath the surface long before anyone notices.
Faith often works the same way.
God is doing work in our lives even when growth isn’t immediately visible.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”- 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
Stay rooted. Stay faithful. Keep growing.

THE ART OF SUISEKI
Most people see a rock.
Suiseki enthusiasts see mountains, cliffs, islands, waterfalls, canyons, and entire landscapes shaped by nature over centuries.
Suiseki (viewing stones) is the Japanese art of appreciating naturally formed stones that evoke a scene, feeling, or place. Much like bonsai, suiseki teaches us to slow down and observe the beauty found in nature’s imperfections.
Each stone tells a different story:
🏔️ Rugged mountain ranges
🌊 Coastal cliffs and shorelines
🏝️ Remote islands
🌫️ Misty valleys and distant peaks
When displayed together, as in this collection, they create a miniature world that invites contemplation and imagination.
At Feral Root Bonsai, we appreciate not only the trees we cultivate but also the natural landscapes they represent. Suiseki and bonsai have been displayed together for generations because both celebrate the same thing, nature in miniature.
Question: When you look at these stones, what landscape do you see? Do you have any suiseki? If you want to own one, we have you covered.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT FERAL ROOT
One of the projects we’ve been working on lately is building new bonsai benches for our private collection. This one is half way completed and look forward to sharing the full updated garden.
Most people see the finished trees, but there’s a lot that happens behind the scenes to create an environment where bonsai can thrive.
Good benches aren’t just about looks. They’re designed to:
• Improve airflow around the trees
• Maximize sunlight exposure
• Make watering easier
• Improve organization
• Create a healthier growing environment
Every board, screw, and design decision is made with the long-term health of the trees in mind.
As our collection continues to grow, we’re investing in better infrastructure to support the trees for years to come.
It’s easy to focus on the bonsai itself, but sometimes the things supporting the tree are just as important as the tree itself.
The same is true in life. Strong foundations create strong growth.
We’re excited to share more as the project comes together.

MONDAY TREE OF THE WEEK - Korean Hornbeam (Carpinus coreana)
Few trees capture the feeling of age and strength quite like the Korean Hornbeam.
Known for its rugged bark, fine branching, and beautiful seasonal changes, this species has become a favorite among bonsai enthusiasts around the world. As it matures, the trunk develops incredible character while the small leaves help create a refined and natural appearance.
What makes Korean Hornbeam special?
- Small leaves perfect for bonsai proportions
- Outstanding bark and trunk character with age
- Excellent ramification and fine branching
- Beautiful fall color ranging from yellow to gold
- Cold hardy and incredibly resilient
Korean Hornbeam rewards patience. Year after year, it continues to build character, refinement, and beauty, reminding us that the best things in bonsai, and in life, take time.
What do you love most about Korean Hornbeams?

One of the beautiful things about bonsai is this:
Growth often happens slowly enough that you don’t notice it day to day.
But over time…
the change becomes undeniable.
Faith can feel the same way.
Even during seasons where it feels like little is happening, God is still working beneath the surface, strengthening roots, shaping character, and preparing growth we cannot yet see.
“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
Stay rooted.
Stay faithful.
Keep growing.

ROOT WORK FROM A FEW WEEKS AGO
A few weeks back, this Bald Cypress got a major repot, and the root system underneath was incredible.
One of the most important parts of bonsai is the part people rarely see…
The roots.
Strong roots are the foundation of everything:
• Health
• Vigor
• Growth
• Recovery
• Future development
Repotting is more than maintenance, it’s one of the biggest investments you can make into the future of a bonsai.
Seeing a root system like this is always rewarding because it tells the story of years of growth happening beneath the surface.
And honestly…
that’s true in life too.
The strongest growth often happens where nobody else can see it.
