Rise. Sun. Set. is an alternate edit from the series Black in Black and White, where the artist photographs Black creatives in bold, high-contrast black and white. Here, the portrait leans into negative space and quiet power. The woman appears without makeup, accessories, or hair, stripping the image down to presence alone. A soft peach pink tone shifts the mood toward tenderness and minimalism, inviting the viewer to slow down and see beauty in what is simple, honest, and unguarded.

Baladas de la desolación / Ballads of Desolation explores Puerto Rico’s housing crisis through intimate scenes inside homes marked by exposure and decay. Made in a house torn open by Hurricane María in 2017 and photographed two years later, it reflects how the storm’s aftermath persists through displacement, gentrification, and unregulated Airbnbs—while honoring domestic abuse survivors for whom safe housing becomes harder to access. Estado perpetuo de incertidumbre / Perpetual State of Grasping in the Dark visualizes retraumatization.

The artist paints landscapes as interior architecture—skies that open like rooms. Each work is a view and a feeling at once; literal atmosphere, and emotion as geography, where an inner or outer conflict can be walked through. Their mixed-race background and adult transition have given them many identities, but few places that hold them all comfortably. These paintings began as a refuge: if they could not be seen whole, they would build a space where wholeness was possible. Over time, refuge became practice. The work is now a meditation on complexity—on the larger deck they live from, beyond the hand they show.
